EasySQL challenge #13MIN

Find the Lowest Price with MIN()

Return the lowest product price as a single value.

The challenge runs on the SQLabHub practice database (SQLite) and uses the products table. You can solve it in the browser, with nothing to install.

The task

Find minimum product price.

A correct answer returns 1 row with one column: MIN(price).

Expected output

Expected output of the challenge
MIN(price)
35.76

The complete result: 1 row. This is the output of the model solution on the practice database.

What you practise

  • Summarising many rows into one value with COUNT, SUM, AVG, MIN or MAX

Use MIN

How the model solution is built, in the order the database evaluates it:

  1. Read from the products table.
  2. Aggregate over all the rows that are left: compute MIN(price). With no GROUP BY, the result is a single row.

What to watch for

MIN() gives you the value, not the row it came from. Adding name to the SELECT list does not reliably return the matching product; for that, sort by price and take one row.

  • Aggregate functions. Aggregates skip NULLs. AVG divides by the number of non-NULL values and COUNT(column) can be smaller than COUNT(*).
