Assumptions and what is not covered

This is an estimate of your tax for the year, not of the exact amount your employer will withhold.

Assumptions

  • All income is W-2 wages from one job, earned evenly through the year.
  • You are a full-year resident of the selected state and work there.
  • You take the standard deduction and claim no dependents or tax credits.
  • You are under 65 and not blind (no additional standard deduction).
  • Married filing jointly assumes your spouse has no income of their own.
  • Health premiums, HSA and FSA amounts you enter are taken from your pay through an employer Section 125 cafeteria plan.
  • Figures are annual tax liability under the published rate schedules, spread evenly over your pay periods. Actual withholding on a paycheck follows your Form W-4 and can differ.
  • Tax is worked out to the cent from the rate schedules. A filed return rounds to whole dollars and, below $100,000 of taxable income, uses the IRS Tax Table, so it can differ by a few dollars.

Not supported

  • Self-employment income and self-employment tax
  • Itemized deductions, dependents, the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit
  • The deductions for tips, overtime and seniors, and investment or retirement income
  • Part-year residents, and people who live in one state and work in another

Rules used

  • Federal: version US-2026.1, in effect January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026, last verified October 11, 2026.

What this Indiana estimate leaves out

Indiana needs county income tax rates for every county before its estimate is meaningful.

  • Indiana income tax. Indiana taxes wages at a single flat state rate.
  • Local taxes. Every Indiana county adds its own income tax, at a rate that depends on the county where you live at the start of the year.

These notes describe Indiana's system in general terms. They have not been checked against the state's 2026 publications, and no Indiana rate or amount is used anywhere in the calculation. For current rates and forms, go to the Indiana Department of Revenue.

How the federal part is calculated

Federal rules are the same in every state. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500, and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower federal income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; health premiums, HSA and FSA amounts taken through an employer plan lower both. The US salary calculator page explains the federal brackets and the difference between marginal and effective rates.

Indiana salary questions

Does Indiana tax wages?

Yes. Indiana taxes wages at a single flat state rate. This calculator does not apply that tax yet, so the take-home figure on this page is higher than what you will actually keep.

How much federal tax is owed on a $60,000 salary in Indiana?

For a single filer in 2026, federal income tax is $5,020.00 and Social Security plus Medicare is $4,590.00, $9,610.00 in total. Those federal amounts are the same in every state. Indiana tax comes on top and is not in that figure.

Does the calculator include local taxes in Indiana?

No. Every Indiana county adds its own income tax, at a rate that depends on the county where you live at the start of the year. None of that is included.

When will Indiana be fully supported?

Indiana needs county income tax rates for every county before its estimate is meaningful. A state is added only after its 2026 rules are checked against the state's own publications and covered by tests.
